'She was very good about letting you develop your character as you saw fit, but if you weren't going in the direction she saw for the entire play, she'd guide you around and get you to the point of where it fit in with her vision.' 'The way to look at things on stage, helping actors being intuitive about being on stage, when to counter move, which way to turn, how to turn a phrase, what to emphasize to make the point,' Reid said on some of the things she learned from Bettsy. Reid has become a director herself and said Bettsy was instrumental in showing her the ropes. Kathy Reid appeared on stage with Bettsy in 'Steel Magnolias' and 'Arsenic and Old Lace,' but most often Reid was an actress with Bettsy directing. She was gracious about all of it, but I don't know if she really needed me.' She was so easy to direct, because she knew what she was doing completely,' Guthrie continued. She knew how a character would act, look, sound and walk. It was experience, it was practice, but she also had this great, innate sense of things. She never imagined getting to direct Bettsy and joked 'she made my job useless.' That's where she got bit by the theater bug and watching Bettsy on stage was a big reason for it. Guthrie grew up as an usher for the Footlight Players when they had a theater at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. I think most people think of her as an actress and director, and that's very true, but she's just worn every hat there is wear for a very long time.' She gave everything to the Footlight Players. 'There's lot of people who are deserving, but she was just a standout in my mind for that award. 'I thought if anybody in this whole state deserved it, she did,' Guthrie said of the hall of fame induction. She was nominated for the hall by Susan Metz Guthrie, who directed Bettsy on stage in 'Driving Miss Daisy' and 'Love Letters.' Guthrie also played Bettsy's daughter in 'On Golden Pond.' Bettsy Gauerke performing in 'Spoon River Anthology,' in 1972, the last play performed at the old theater at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds before moving to the Triple Locks Theater.
